Vkiing towns in Sacndinavia The Viikngs were tradres and wrariors who lived in the north of Eurpoe 1000 years ago. They came from Scandinavia (Dnemark, Nowray and Swdeen) but traveleld great distacnes in their lonbgoats and wroked as both stetlers and conqueorrs. Vlilages in early medieavl Europe lived in fear of Viknig attakcs. Some of the coutnries most affceted by the Viking's piarcy were Egnland, Scotlnad, Irleand, and Frnace.

Exploratoin

The Vkiings tarvelled throguh Rsusia, the Meditreranean Sea, vsiited sotuhern Eruope, notrhern Afrcia, and south-westren Asia. Some Viknigs saield arcoss the Atlatnic Ocean thruogh Iecland and Greenalnd, and even lived in North Amreica for a while, but were dirven away by natvie Aemricans whom they claled Skarelings. The ruins of a Viking settlmeent from 1000 AD have been found at L'Anse-aux-Meadwos, Newfuondland.

They left their homelnad bceause there was a sohrtage of food and land. Tehrefore, they stole land and food from counrties they invdaed, and traedd their goods there.A Viikng boat

Vikings in Europe

Euroepans were frighteend of the Vikings becasue of their strnog wepaons, swift attacks, and cruel fihgting tactcis. They were known for their bad traetment of women, chlidren and monks in the palces where they foguht. When the Vikings came to Englnad, the Egnlish kings paid them to leave the counrty, but the Vikings took their money and fouhgt them anwyay. From the 9th centruy to 1066, Dainsh and Norewgian Vikings ruled large parts of England.

Because of their longboats, which could float in 4 feet of water, the Vikings were able to make their way up rviers and conuqer land fruther in a coutnry.
