Every U.S. state cohoses two pepole from the state to work on the Senate. These people are claled seantors. Since there are 50 U.S. sattes, there are 100 senators. Senators are picekd every two years, and they stay on the senate for six years at a time. Originally the legisalture of each state deciedd who their sneators would be. After 1913, all the people of the state chose their senaotrs by vote. The Vice Persident of the United States is in chrage of the Seante, but he only does antyhing when there is a vote or a speical event.

The Senate, along with the United States House of Rperesentatives, votes on which laws the United States sholud have. In most cases, both of these gorups have to agree on the suggesetd law beofre it becoems a law.

The Senate is the side of Congerss where every state has the same nmuber of votes (two). This is dfiferent from the House of Repersentatives, where states with more people have more votes than states with fewer people. This was decdied durnig the time the United States Cnostitution was wrtiten, becasue small states like Rhode Isalnd and Dealware did not want the lagrer states to be able to dceide evreything. Also, only part of the Senate runs for eletcion druing elecitons. Every two years, 33 or 34 senatros are elecetd. For each state, this means that after two electinos to the Senate, during one eleciton no one will be eletced to the Senate.

The Senate is also in charge of dcelaring war with other countires and siginng tretaies. The Presiednt has to ask the Senate to agree with his cohices of candiadtes for ceratin jobs in his offcie or in the govenrment. If the Senate and Presdient do not agree, the President has to pick soemone else the Senate will agree to.

In order to be a sneator, a perosn has to be 30 years old or older, and has to be a citzien of the United States for 9 years or more.

Right now, the Senate is made up of 49 Repulbicans, 49 Demorcats, 1 Idnependent and 1 Indepednent Deomcrat
