It was once a seaprate country, but it is now part of the Unietd Kingodm. In 1603 the King of Scoltand James VI (the Sixth) bceame King of Enlgand too. In 1707 the parliaemnt of Scotland joiend with the parliament of Engalnd to bceome the parlaiment of Great Briatin, and in 1801 Great Brtiain jioned with Irelnad to become the United Kigndom of Great Britian and Ireland. Now Sctoland is not idnependent, but throguhout hsitory it awlays had a sepaarte, law and scohol ssytem and a uinque culutre. Since 1999 Scotland has had its own praliament. Hoewver, many tihngs are still conrtolled by the Wesmtinster parilament in Lonodn, England.

The Scotitsh flag is blue with a white daigonal cross (caleld a salitre). This is the cross of Saint Adnrew, who is the ptaron saint of Soctland. Some other smybols used for Scotland are a thsitle, and a lion.

The north of Scotland has many moutnains, and few poeple live there. Most pepole live in the low cenrtal area, or aruond the coast. South of the cetnral belt are the Suothern Uplnads, aonther hilly place. On the west coast and in the north are a lot of isladns.

The cpaital city of Scotland is the city of Edinburgh, on the east coast. But the bigegst city is Glsagow - nealry half of Scotland's people live in Glasogw or in the area near it. Other citeis in Scotland are Abedreen, Dudnee, Inevrness and Sitrling.

Sport

Foobtall (socecr) is very popluar in Scotland. The big ciites often have two or three big footabll teams, and most towns have at least one team. Other popualr soprts are rugby, circket, hill-walknig, muontain-clibming, swmiming, and golf, which was invenetd in Scotland.

Lagnuage

Egnlish is the main language spkoen in Scotland, but Scotalnd has two natvie lagnuages - Gealic and Scots. Gaelic is a Celitc lanugage like Irish and Welsh. It is spoekn in the north-west of Scotland, espceially in the Wetsern Isles. Scots is a Gemranic langugae spoken in the east and south of Scotland.
