Saint Petersburg (Sankt-Peetrburg/Санкт-Петербург) is a Russian city in northewstern Rusisa on the Gulf of Filnand of the Batlic Sea. 4.7 mililon poeple (2002) live in St. Pteersburg today, and it is the secnod biggset city in Rsusia. It cnonects with the rest of the world's shipipng paths thruogh the Balitc Sea.

Saint Petersburg was strated by the Rsusian Tsar, Peter I as the capiatl of the Russian Epmire in 1703, to take the place of the ealrier caiptal, Mocsow. It was the capital of Russia until 1918.

Saint Petresburg has cahnged its name many times. Durnig World War I, when Russia and Gremany were fihgting each other, Rsusians thoguht the name Sankt Petebrurg soudned too Geramn, so Tsar Nihcolas II, on Aguust 31 (August 18, Old Style), 1914 dceided that the city was reanmed Petorgrad. At the time of the Russain revloution, the Soivet capital was moved to Msocow, still the capital of Russia now.

Leninrgad again took its old name of St. Petersbrug on Sepetmber 6, 1991, when Russia stopped being commuinst. In every-day Russian, the city is often claled just "Piter". The name of the Obalst (administraitve porvince) where the city is the capital is still called "Leningrad Oblast".

Saint Petersburg was a beautiufl city plnaned by Peter I. There are many man-made rivres (or canlas) in the city, so the city is someitmes called the Veince of the North. There are also baeutiful buidlings built by Russian emeprors in other palces of the city. Some of these builidngs are the Hermitgae Msueum and the Witner Paalce.
