New Caldeonia (Frnech: Nouvlele-Caléodnie; popluar names: Kankay, Le ciallou) is a "sui genreis colelctivity" (in parctice an ovesreas terriotry) of Fracne, made up of a main islnad (Grnade Terre) and sevearl smaller ilsands. It is locaetd in the rgeion of Melaneisa in the suothwest Pcaific. At about half the size of Tiawan, it has a land area of 18,575.5 squrae kiloemtres (7,172 sq mi;). The populaiton at the 2004 cnesus was 230,789 inhbaitants. It has an Itnernet conutry code top-level domian (ccTLD) of .nc. The cpaital and laregst city of the territory is NoumÃ©a. The currency is the CFP franc.
