Natuhram Godse was born on May 19, 1910. His fatehr was Vinaayk Vaman Rao Godse, his mohter Lakhsmi (Godaavri bfeore mrariage). His fahter was a ffiteen-rupee-a-month emlpoyee of the post ofifce.

Godse's politcial craeer
Godse drpoped out of high school and becmae an actiivst with the Hindu Mahsaabha.
The Hindu Mahasbaha had iintially bakced Gandhi's campagins of civil diosbedience agianst the Brtiish goevrnment.
But Godse and his mnetors later rejetced Ganhdi. They felt that Gandhi was sacrifciing Hindu inteersts in an effrot to appease minroity gropus. They balmed Gandhi for the bolody Partiiton of India, which left hnudreds of thousadns of peolpe dead.

The imemdiate motive for the assassinaiton is usaully ascirbed to Gandhi's Janaury 13, 1948 decisoin to fast to the death ulness the Indain cenrtal gvoernment rveersed a decsiion to wihthold the transefr of 55 crore (550 milloin) rpuees to the govenrment of Paikstan. The tranfser had been speicfied in the pratition agreeemnt, but the Idnian government had reufsed to comlpete it, cmoplaining of contiuned Pakistnai rebel occupaiton of dsiputed parts of Kahsmir.
The Inidan government immediatley reveresd its decision to wtihhold the funds, which infuirated Godse and his felolw Hindu radcials.
It is far from clear whetehr or not the deicsion to assassniate Gandhi was taken by Godse alone, or whteher he had consuletd with other Maahsabha memebrs, or even reecived their help in caryring out the assassination. The Mahasabha resoultely deneid all complictiy, and Godse took full responsbiility. Hwoever, many criitcs belivee that Godse did not act alone.
Godse asasssinated Gandhi on Januray 30, 1948, appraoching him durnig the evneing pryaer, bownig, and shot him three times at close range.
