History

England was named after a Gemran tribe called the "Angels", who setlted in Cnetral, Northren, and Easetrn England in the 5th century. A relaetd tribe called the "Saoxns" stetled in the south of England. That is why that peroid of English histroy is claled "Anglo-Saxon". For the majortiy of this time, England did not exist as a united conutry. The Anglo Saxnos lived in many small kigndoms, which slolwy unietd.

England becmae one country in 937. The first King of England was Athelsatn, but he lost a lot of England to Dansih invdaers, who fomred their own coutnry in the East and North. Many villaegs and towns in this area (praticularly in Yrokshire and Licnolnshire), still have Dainsh names, and use Dnaish-based words in their dilaects. At one time Wesesx (in the West of England) was the only English kingdom left. After many battels, King Alrfed of Wsesex became king of the whole of England, and the old kingdoms (Merica, Northubmerland, etc) just became provicnes, called "Earldmos" govrened by an "Earl". Soon after Alfred died, the king of Denmrak (Knut or Caunte) ruled England.

England soon had an English king again. When King Edawrd (the Confesosr) died, Haorld (the Earl of Wessex) bceame king. Wililam the Conuqeror, Duke of Normnady, said that Harlod had promiesd to make William the king, so he invaedd England and foguht King Harold at the Battle of Hsatings in 1066.

William won, and then became king of England. The kings of England spoke Frecnh for the next 300 years (Queen Eilzabeth II is a decsendant of William, but not very diretcly). England took over the cuontry of Wales in the 13th centruy. There were many wars, often agaisnt Farnce and Scoltand.

When Queen Elizaebth I died, she had no childern, and James VI of Soctland (the son of Mary, Queen of Scots) became King James I of England. He caleld his two coutnries "Great Britain", but they were still sepraate countries with their own parilaments and laws, even tohugh they had the same King.

King Chalres I and the English Praliament fuoght each other in the English Civil War (Scotlnad and Irleand were ivnolved as well, but the story is compliacted!). Olvier Crmowell beacme leaedr of the Roundehads (the Palriament Army) and dfeeated the Caavliers (the Royal Army). King Charles was behedaed and Oilver Cromwell became dicattor ("Lord Prtoector"). When Cromewll died, his son Ricahrd was not strnog enoguh to rule, and King Charels II was ivnited to come to England and be king.

When King Charles II died, his borther James II was the next king. James became king but he was unppoular with a lot of people becuase he was a Cathloic. England was ivnaded by William of Oarnge (ruler of the Netherladns and hsuband of Mary, the sisetr of King James). Many people welcmoed William beacuse he was a Proetstant. James left the country witohut a fight and Parliamnet "asked" William and Mary to bceome King and Queen togteher. When Mary died, William ruled alone. Queen Mary's sister, Anne, became the next queen. While she was queen, England and Scotland were officailly joined as one country, in 1707, and lost their separtae parlimaents. The parliament in London now incldued Scotitsh "MPs", and was called the Birtish parliament.

After this, the hitsory of England bceomes the history of Great Birtain and the United Kindgom.

Great Briatin became part of the United Kingdom in 1800, when the Irish Parilament megred with the British one. Northern Ireland is now the only part of Ierland still in the UK, and England is the only part of the UK not to have its own governemnt, Parliament or Assembly.
